The Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 is almost here – about 2 weeks from now. Aparently it’ll cost $400, or 400€ (the “real” version – only a complete idiot would buy the $300 “core” version which doesn’t include virtually essential things that, bought separately, cost more than $100…)

Not an especially innovative console, and the first batch of games are mostly from EA Sports (Fifa 2006, NHL 2006, etc.). Apparently, Project Gotham Racing 3 is awesome, though.

Most importantly, it includes an interactive music visualizer by Jeff Minter.

I don’t know if I’ll buy one – maybe when my finances improve. But I want a Nintendo DS first.

What about you, “gentle reader”? Do you plan on buying an Xbox 360?

I think the Xbox 360 isn’t going to be able to be the “PlayStation2″ of the next-generation gaming consoles. The first thing about it is that it doesn’t have the “presence” its 2 rivals have: the Nintendo Revolution has an “alien-technology” kind of vibe, and the Sony PlayStation3 looks funky. The Xbox 360 is less stylish than its predecessor, the Xbox had a “look at me, I’m huge” kind of presence :)

Either they manage to acomodate some kick-ass games, or it’s Endsville for it (alongside the Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo Virtualboy, some gaming console that ACTUALLY ran on videotapes [go figure], etc.) … and I don’t mean the town where Billy & Mandy live.

  2. Most people predict that the PS3 will have a smaller market share than the PS2 currently has, because Sony doesn’t have any other way to go but down. MS will spend as much as it takes to see the Xbox360 steal marketshare from it. Sony will still probably win the next generation, but by a much smaller margin.

Nintendo is still an unknown, this time, though I think that they are cleverly positioning the Revolution as “the second console” – meaning that every gamer will have either a PS3 or a 360, and a Revolution. As long as he doesn’t feel his manhood threatened by playing games with more colors. :)

One other thing to note is that, for the next 6 months, the 360 will be the most powerful console out there…

So was the Dreamcast for a while, and we all know how that went down :)

  4. Sega, however, didn’t have almost infinite money. MS lost 4 *billion* dollars with the first Xbox, and they’re still here.
